Reading HAPPND does not require an account. Stories, WORLD, WATCH and shared links are public. An account exists only so your follows, saves, notifications and digests can persist across devices.
With an account: your email address (or the identifier returned by Google sign-in), a display name if you set one, and the things you choose to create — follows, saved stories, notes, tags, notification preferences, digest runs and research requests you submit.
Without an account: aggregate product analytics such as which screens are used and whether a share completed. We do not sell personal data and we do not run third-party advertising trackers.
To keep you signed in, to show your working set, to send the notifications and digests you asked for, to apply fair-use limits on expensive research operations, and to detect abuse.
HAPPND runs on managed cloud infrastructure for hosting, database, authentication and email delivery, and calls third-party content APIs (for example video platforms and open news-event datasets) to gather public metadata. Those providers process data on our behalf under their own terms.
You can change or delete your follows, saves and notification settings at any time from your account screens. To request access to, correction of, or deletion of your account data, contact us via the contact page from the email address on the account. Deleting an account removes your follows, saves and delivery records.
We use local storage and cookies for your session, and for small preferences such as the last map state. There is no cross-site advertising cookie.
